I'm starting a new portrait, here is my line drawing. This is going to be a portrait of Composer Philip Glass, 11 x 14 pencil on Bristol Smooth paper.
I call this stage of my process the ugly stage as the lines are drawn quickly and looks like a 2 year old did it. I use my line drawing as a map for placement purposes. I map out where I want the facial features and where I want light and shadows. For my line drawing, I used a Pentel P205 mechanical pencil with a 2B lead.
I first draw on a plain piece of cheap printer paper. I do this because I erase a lot and don't want to damage my expensive drawing paper. Once I have my line drawing, I then tape it to the back of my actual drawing paper using artist tape. I then transfer my line drawing on to my drawing paper with the help of my light box.
Now that I have my line drawing done. I can start to bring Philip to life on paper.
The purpose of this blog is to share my passion and love of drawing, more specifically; the drawing of portraits. I hope to document my development in hopes of becoming a better artist. I also want to share with friends, family, and anyone who is interested what I am up to and working on.
